The railway was built by the Austrians between 1861 and 1863 and inaugurated at the end of 1863. It is 33.4 km long and technically difficult to travel, with a difference in level of 339 metres.
The route is today the main attraction in the Banat Mountains because of the beauty of the landscape and the importance of the whole work. A special attraction is the Jitin Viaduct, with five arches over the Jitin Valley. Another 9 viaducts and 14 tunnels complete the beauty of the route.
The whole one-way journey takes about two hours. The train running on the route is operated by CFR and ticket reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance. The cost of a one-way ticket is 13.9 RON.
