Shrewsbury: St Philomena's Way (GPX only)
A Pilgrim Way from the Cathedral of Our Lady Help of Christians in Shrewsbury to the Diocesan Shrine of SS Peter, Paul & Philomena in New Brighton, the Wirral.
The Way follows the Shropshire Way along the north bank of the River Severn out of Shrewsbury and then north to pass the remains of Haughmond Abbey. The Way reaches the town of Wen and the little Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. The Way continues to follow the Shropshire Way to Hollinwood where the PW continues north on paths across farmland to reach the Church of St George, Whitchurch. From Whitchurch the Way follows a north-west direction to cross the Llangollen Canal at Jackson's Bridge to join the Sandstone Trail, then the Bishop Bennet Way, and the Sandstone Trail again. The Way climbs Maiden Castle and veers in a north-east direction along a ridge to Beeston Castle. On reaching the Shropshire Union Canal at Wharton's Bridge the Way leaves the Sandstone Trail and joins the Two Saints Way to travel west along the Canal to Chester. After passing Chester Cathedral and the Church of St Francis Assisi the Way re-joins the Shropshire Union Canal as far as Backford Bridge. In the village of Backford the Way joins the North Cheshire Way until Hooton Railway Station.
Here pilgrims have two options: 1: Continue on through the towns of the Wirral visiting the churches which evidence the Catholic history of north-west England 2: Take the train straight to New Brighton to visit the Shrine. Walkers turn west and then north along lanes to cross the M53 and continue along roads to reach the A41 where the Way turns left to reach the Church of Christ the King, Bromborough. After a diversion through parkland to visit St Patrick's Well, the Way traverses the Port Sunlight estate to reach the Church of St John the Evangelist, New Ferry. The Way continues north through an urban landscape passing the Church of St Anne, Rock Ferry, the Church of St Joseph, Tranmere, The Church of SS Walburg & Lawrence, Birkenhead, the remains of Birkenhead Priory, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Birkenhead, the Church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, & St Joseph, Wallasey before reaching the shore of the Mersey estuary. Finally the Way turns west, inland to reach the Shrine of SS Peter, Paul & Philomena, New Brighton.
