The "12 Apostles" nature trail in the Călimani Mountains admirably adds to the local natural landscape and helps any hiker stopping by the information panels gain a deeper understanding of the places they see.
Perhaps precisely because of this route (Gura Haitii - 12 Apostles rock group), which is one of the most popular and accessible routes in the Călimani Mountains, they chose to set up the nature trail here.
The panels along the route tell you about the volcanic origin of the Călimani Mountains, the formation of the group of rocks with mysterious human faces that are now called the 12 apostles, or the biodiversity of the place. One of the most interesting stories on the trail may be the "milk route": it follows the process of milk production starting from the source, i.e. from the sheepfolds located up in the mountains.
The trail is accessible and spectacular both in summer and winter.
- To go back, you can (also) follow the red dot signs, towards the Red Stones peak (without reaching it) and then towards Gura Haitii.
- Take your time to explore the group of rocks on the trail. Climb the nearby gorge, slightly separated from the rocks themselves, to admire them from above.
Tips and hints
Another accessible route that reaches the 12 Apostles reserve starts at the same-name hermitage; it is also marked with a blue dot. However, it is just a classic mountain route, with no information pannels.
Trail marked with blue dot.
Hiking boots, water, snacks, a whistle (bears can sometimes be spotted on the route).
