The hiking route is organized as an educational path with 6 information panels, officially known as "Karst Relief from the Șureanu Mountains". It can be completed on foot or by bicycle (on the dirt road).
The Fundatura Ponor or God's Palm, as the place is sometimes called for its surreal beauty, close to the fairy tale, can be considered a unique place in Romania. At the end of the route, travelers discover a wide valley, with the Ponor river cutting its way all along the plateau, with scattered isolated households and with haystacks built by the locals. The area is, in fact, a karst depression located at an altitude of 900 meters. It resulted from the karstic action of Ponor river, which has cut into the Jurassic limestone rocks forming the photogenic ensembles of rocks seen here. The Ponor Valley stretches for 9 kilometers.
In the rainy season, the waters overflow, sometimes flooding the plateau, and in wintertime, they freeze, forming large icy segments, like ice rinks.
Author’s recommendation
You can find a camping spot there - cautiously because almost everywhere it's private property. Locals can offer a hot meal or cheese.
The tourist mark to follow is an orange hiker. However, locals might guide you on a shorter, alternative path, which bears no signs - so it's better to have a downloaded digital map.
