The route takes you into the heart of the Țara Hațegului UNESCO Geopark and offers you opportunities to discover places where dinosaur fossils have been found, breathtaking landscapes, and a medieval fortress.

The ride goes partly on macadam road, and partly on asphalt, passes over several fields, where cows or sheep occasionally graze, and ticks off several defining elements for the geopark's identity.

The road to Mălăiesti Fortress might seem like a long introduction to this land. By following this road, you get the best views over the ridge of the Retezat Mountains, because nothing blocks the view.

After visiting the fortress, don't hesitate to make a stop at the Nucșoara Visitor Center, which is also the Retezat National Park visitor center.

Next is the village of Ohaba-Sibișel, a traditional village. Here, your route will be guided by the stone wall built on the side of the road, with stones that resemble the size of dinosaur eggs. From here on, you enter what is called the Valley of the Dinosaurs, where several sites of dwarf dinosaur fossils have been marked.

It is useful to know that Baron Franz Nopcsa was the first to discover and study these fossils in the area. The Nopcsa family owned several mansions in the region, and you can admire one on the route, at Săcel (from the outside only).

Author’s recommendation

If you do this route in the spring, near Sălașu de Sus you pass by a Daffodils Meadow - "Fânațele cu Nascise" as it is called in Romanian. Worth a stop!
