A charming little Eifel town with historical sights forms the starting point for the first stage. It is relaxing on nature trails through forests and over plateaus.

Blankenheim - source of the Ahr - Eifel Museum - Viaduct Onerahreck - Freilinger See difficulty: medium, duration approx. 3 hours, ascent: 343m, descent: 361m; the first stage is already impressive with its wealth of natural monuments and cultural treasures. The source of the Ahr in Blankenheim forms the starting point of the first stage. Past the Eifel Museum and the Römerstrasse information center, you stroll through alleys, along the Schwanenweiher, following the upper course of the Ahr. Then it goes through the railway underpass. Now it is getting more challenging and you are hiking steeply uphill. Through thick beech wood you come to the plateau of the Birker mountain. Spectacular views of the southern Eifel heights reward the climb. Passing fields, over quiet forest paths of the 484 meter high Bohrsberg you reach the shores of the Freilinger lake.

Blankenheim - source of the Ahr - Eifel Museum - Viaduct Onerahreck - Freilinger See

Blankenheim: The small town with its medieval charm is worth an extended visit, not only because of the picturesque half-timbered ensembles, the old city gates, but also because of its mighty castle complex. The first stage of the AhrSteig begins in the center. The Ahr rises below a dreamy old half-timbered house. Past the Schwanenweiher we leave the friendly village and walk through the open valley along the edge of the forest. Behind a railway underpass, the path now rises in the young mixed forest to the open plateau on Birker Berg. Right away, it is mostly a natural climb back into the forest below the Reetz district. We cross the road to Reetz; now the path swings gently back up to the plateau, where relaxation furniture invites you to linger. The view to the south covers the forested hills of the southern Ahr Mountains. A short stretch through a young deciduous forest, then we pass the top of the Bohrberg and a few minutes later the idyllic waters of Lake Freilingen spread out in front of us.
