The circular route starts in the Malerwinkel of Bacharach, one of the most romantic areas of the historic city center, for which old half-timbered houses and winding lanes are characteristic. The Münzbach flows here partly open through the village. Steeply stretches the route uphill towards the castle Stahleck, which towers imposingly over the city. But after a few meters climb worth a detour to Wernerkapelle. The listed ruin stands picturesquely on the slope and allows a first view over the roofs of Bacharach on the Rhine. Stahleck Castle houses a youth hostel. This allows a first promising break on the outdoor terrace behind the castle gate. The Stahlberg loop continues up the slope behind the castle, so that you can even look over the tower roof of the castle across the Rhine and the surrounding vineyards. Now it goes parallel to the slope in the Steeger valley on quiet forest trails and through an animal enclosure. The hiker will find the old wine-growing town of Bacharach-Steeg with its St. Anna Church literally at its feet. Again and again one has the ruin of Castle Stahlberg (not to be confused with the castle Stahleck about Bacharach) in view, this happens once on the opposite slope. An old slate tunnel on the roadside already allows an insight into the inside of the cave from the outside. Finally, the hiker crosses the Münzbach, on the other side of the hill on old farm roads from fallow vineyards and an exciting path on a slate rock wall past the castle Stahlberg getting closer. The old walls should definitely be explored. The hiker enters the castle via a narrow wooden bridge, from which parts of the ring wall, remains of a rectangular tower and a round tower are preserved. A resting place in the inner courtyard of the ruin offers itself for the next promising break with a fantastic view into the Steeger valley. The path continues to the Dorweiler brook and, after crossing it, leads up to a plateau - a foothill of the Hunsrück. Up here, the hiker experiences an impressive expanse. On trails lined with trees and shrubs, the Stahlberg loop slowly stretches back to the Rhine, all the way to the Heinrich-Heine-Höhe with a magnificent view of Bacharach and the Rhine Valley as far as Trechtingshausen. On the descent over the Orion Trail, which takes its name from a rare butterfly found here, the path runs along old city wall remnants and defense towers down to the old town. Here the hiker will find numerous refreshments.
