We start at the birthplace of the river Lahn! Because the Lahnwanderweg trail sets off from the source of the Lahn at an altitude of 606 m in the Rothaargebirge. Silent forests, cosy places and heavenly peace.

Cheerful and light-hearted, the small river Lahn has its source at an altitude of over 600 m in an idyllic spring pond at the Lahnhof in the Rothaargebirge. From here the tour continues along wonderful forest paths. At the Ilsequelle you can satisfy your thirst with healthy water. It has already been known as a sacred spring in the Middle Ages. The upper Ilsetal inspires. Here you will walk along a wild and romantic brook. Finally, the Lahnwanderweg trail leads us along scenic paths through quiet forests down to Feudingen.

Author’s recommendation

Take a break at the "Heilige Ilsequelle". In the Middle Ages it was one of the most famous healing springs in Central Europe.

Turn-by-turn directions

The small spring pond’s amazing green beautifully shimmers in the early day light. From the Forsthaus Lahnquelle, follow the road slightly uphill to the Hotel Lahnhof. In front of the hotel your trail goes up to the right. Passing a car park for hikers, please cross the state road L722. Enjoy the view of the headwaters of the rivers Lahn, Eder and Sieg at the edge of the forest where you will reach the highest point of the hike at 664 m above sea level.

The Lahnwanderweg trail now joins the fairy tale trail “Kleiner Rothaar” (little Rothaar) for a while where you can learn about the life of the little redheaded dwarf Rothaar who cares about nature. Over a wooden bridge the signposting of the Lahnwanderweg trail leads us into the wild and romantic upper Ilsetal without getting wet. Now you will have a wonderful walk along the river Ilse. At the holy spring of the Ilse you should take an inspiring break on the hiking wooden lounger. Afterwards cross the small brook again and follow the markings up to Heiligenborn.

A secluded spot with pretty half-timbered houses. For a short distance the stage now runs parallel to a district road with little traffic and, immediately behind a car park for hikers, leads straight ahead into the forest towards Feudingen. Hurricane Kyrill has provided some beautiful views in this section. From Lahnquelle onwards, you hike almost exclusively downhill. Silently and contemplatively, the walk continues through the cosy forest.

Where the trail leads out of the forest, you will have an openened up view over the hilly landscape. A small rest area at the entrance to Feudingen offers a beautiful panorama of the small climatic health resort. Following the road "Zum Eichholz" you reach the hiking portal in Feudingen after walking a few hundred metres. Here the second stage of the Lahnwanderweg trail starts. From the hiking portal you can easily reach the centre of the village near the church, the railway station and the accommodations in the village.
