This roundtrip trail takes you from Geilo living city center up to a cozy farm cabin Hakkesetstølen, this is a summer farm and now cafe and accomodation whole year around.  There is a big diffrence in atmosphere between Geilo and Hakkesetstølen. Via the cabin area Kikut to a nice little lake, if you want you can swim here!

You’ll hike partly over wide cross country trails, graveled roads that are easy to follow in the cabin area and some part small single tracks. A nice mix of everything, but the elevation up and down can make this trail a bit demanding if you are not used to this. This rout is only partly signposted, so you will need a map, or the app to follow the route.

The summer ski lift from Vestlia Ski Center to the top of the slalom hills makes this hike easily accessible and suitable for a family outing. Hiking from Geilo town center to Hakkesetstølen is more demanding, as the first few kilometers run uphill.

Author’s recommendation

Start this tour in a easy and cool way by taken the summer ski lift from Vestlia Ski Center. Please use some time at the viewing point just aside the top station from the ski lift. You will get a magnificant view to the Hallingskarvet National Park and a great look out over the little mountaint town Geilo.

From the top of the chairlift there is a sign posted trail towards Hakkesetstølen.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the tourist office in Geilo to Hakkesetstølen

Coming out of the tourist office in Geilo, take to the right and walk around the corner of the building. Walk down the stairs to the right and take the passage underneath the road. Once on the other side, follow the walkway as it travels between the farmyard and parking at Geilojordet, in the direction of Road Fv40.

Continue on the walkway as it runs eastwards alongside Road Fv40 and crosses the bridge. About 180 meters after the bridge, the walkway runs below the road, and once on the other side, you’ll see a large brown sign reading Vestlia Resort. Here, you can either follow the signs to the resort and take the ski lift from the ski center, saving your legs the ascent, or hike to Hakkesetstølen.

If choosing to hike, continue uphill along the walkway as it runs alongside the farm road. You’ll see signs to Hakkeset along the walkway. About 150 meters after having passed Geilo Horse Center, the road splits in two. Continue on the road running straight ahead (Gamle Skurdalsvegen).

Follow Gamle Skurdalsvegen as it winds its way uphill. In the third bend, take to the right. Follow the signposted trail to Hakkesetstølen, continuing further uphill and into the woods. The trail crosses a marsh and can become wet in rainy conditions. About 220 meters after passing the marsh, the trail crosses a graveled road and continues straight ahead.

Upon reaching the slalom hills, follow the green signs with a wanderer guiding you across the ski slopes. Having passed the final slope, follow the trail as it continues into the forest. After about 600 meters, you’ll reach a fork in the trail. Take the path to the left, leading south-eastwards to Hakkesetstølen. From here, it’s about 500 meters left until you reach Hakkesetstølen. You’re close to the tree line now, and the views are wide-ranging.

If wishing to take the ski lift down to Vestlia on your way back from Hakkesetstølen, take the trail leading straight ahead at the first fork (where you turned to the left on your way up, about 500 meters before Hakkesetstølen). You’ll reach the ski lift after about 700 meters after the fork. The ski lift operates between 10am and 5pm.

From Hakkesetstølen to Kikut

From Hakkesetstølen, follow the graveled road eastwards. After about 670 meters, take the trail to the left. Having hiked for about a hundred meters along the trail, you’ll reach another graveled road that you follow straight ahead. You’ll soon get a view of the small forest lake Geilotjørne, apartment complexes, cabins, and a small slalom hill to the left. Follow the trail as it runs downhill on the right side of the lake. Upon reaching the east edge of the lake, cross over the main road Fv4o towards a new cabin area. At the Lomtjødnlie road, walk straight ahead and turn towards the left, when you see a little lake in fornt of you. With the next opportunity take the road to your left, and by the next crossing again to the left. Here you will find a sign to a track towards Bruslettstølen. The track is wide enough to be used by 4x4 cars and ATV.

Cross a little river, trough the forrest, just after a clear swing take the single track over the swomp, a river and hipp hill straight towards Bruslettstølen. Take the trail towards the left and follow this one all the way down untill you reach a tunnel under road Fv40 again. This last part before and after the tunnel is a cross country trail during winter time. Just follow it down untill you are back in the living area of Geilo, Under the tunnel to the left and follow the pedestrain road back to Geilo center.
