One of the classic routes around Brașov; it goes along well-trodden paths by many hikers and even cyclists. It is also known as the "Yellow Road".

The paths that start from the end of the Schei neighborhood in Brașov generally lead to Poiana Brașov and Postăvaru Peak. These are mostly wide and well-organized forest paths. Although they are not marked for cyclists, many mountain bikers come here, following the mountain signs just like hikers.

This route, starting at Pietrele lui Solomon and reaching Postăvaru cabin welcomes almost everyone. It comes with only a few steep, sometimes demanding parts, through deciduous forests that gradually become coniferous. In fact, the landscape is mostly dominated by forests. Towards the end, in Poiana Ruia, the view opens as a reward to Poiana Brașov and Măgura Codlei. For an even greater reward, you must reach the Postavaru Chalet (Julius Römer Hütte). Here, on sunny days, you can see far away - towards the beautiful ridges of Bucegi and Piatra Craiului.

The descent is mostly pleasurable, a little steep in from place to place. To your front, you see only the roofs of the hotels in Poiana Brașov.

Author’s recommendation

Do the trek out of the ski season - you won't see crowds at the chalet and you can descend to Poiana Brasov on the slope.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Pietrele lui Solomon, the yellow band marking takes a turn from the wide gravel path, entering the forest. This leads to steeper climbs. The longer alternative is to follow the gravel road that cyclists also follow. You'll reach Poiana Nisipului. There is no chance of getting lost. Shortly afterward, the path enters the forest again and meets with other well-known routes in the vicinity of Brașov. Your path goes slightly uphill constantly, up to Poiana Dreșter. Here, you'll find a bench for a well-deserved rest. An even more sustained climbing follows, then a forest road leading straight to Poiana Ruia. The effort is yet to be over because there is still some part to climb up to Postăvaru Chalet - not much, but steep, through a clump of fir trees.

Questions and answers

Question from Nicholas Condon · January 21, 2023 · Community
Hello, I am thinking of coming to Romania 🇷🇴 in the second week of Easter. Without knowing much my plan was to get train to Brasov and take it from there. Solo traveller most likely. I want to do a couple of hikes and maybe a tour to possibly see bears (as long as this doesn't disrupt the bears) I know the Carpathians are good but maybe I won't have time. I will have a week. What might you recommend and what is the weather usually like the first two weeks of April? Many thanks Nick

Hi. Here is an idea of what you could do for a whole week around Brasov: Come to Brașov: One week up & down the whole region But, in your case, I see some limitations: the period + transportation. Strictly from Brasov, you can explore Postavaru. Nearby, you can try Piatra Mare or Piatra Craiului, both accessible by public transport. For Postavaru, you already found a suggestion. For Piatra Mare, take a public bus to Dambul Morii. You can either take the route through the 7 Ladders Canyon ( marked with yellow stripe), or a more classic one (red stripe). For Piatra Craiului, you can take a local train to Zarnesti. But it will take you 1.5-2 hours just to get from the train station to Fantana lui Botorog, the starting point for a few classic routes... If you like forests, I suggest you try a walk either on Lempes Hill (starting from the town Harman, bus from Brasov) or in the Birch Tree Reserve at Reci (REGIO train Brasov - Bita). If you go to Harman, visit the fortified church as well. Other suggestions for day trips: Rasnov or Racos (for the inactive volcano), both by train. !!The Rasnov Citadel is now closed for renovations, not sure if it will be open in April. Bran-Moieciu area, very popular with tourists, is hard to get to by public transport. As for bears, there is the Libearty Reserve in Zarnesti or the bear obsevatories at Lake St. Ana / Baile Tusnad (all with guided tours only). From your question, I am not sure if you're visiting during the Orthodox Easter (aka 16-17th April). If so, book accommodation now, as the period is crowded. Public transport works on those days; museums & shops are closed. I would suggest you avoid Sinaia & Busteni - extremely crowded. Last year, we had snow in April in Brasov. Otherwise, April should be a spring month, with an average 10-20 degrees, but the weather now is not like it used to be. Bring some hiking boots though and layered clothing.
