The reserve was created in 1942 on the initiative of the ornithologist Dionisie Liniei and includes swampy areas with ponds, peninsulas and oysters, as well as places where reeds, poplar groves and acacias grow. It is a place where 40% of the bird species occurring on the territory of Romania can be seen, including many water birds, some of which are protected species.
Hiking is easy, without significant differences in altitude and covers only the western part of the reserve.
