The Satchinez Bird Reserve covers the moorland between the villages of Satchinez and Biled. The area is also known as the "Banat Delta".

The Ornithological Reserve is relatively close to Timisoara and it is a destination that is nevertheless little known. During this hike, from the beginning of spring, we have the opportunity to cross a wild nature that reminds us of the old swamps that covered these areas in the past.

The reserve was created in 1942 on the initiative of the ornithologist Dionisie Liniei and includes swampy areas with ponds, peninsulas and oysters, as well as places where reeds, poplar groves and acacias grow. It is a place where 40% of the bird species occurring on the territory of Romania can be seen, including many water birds, some of which are protected species.

Hiking is easy, without significant differences in altitude and covers only the western part of the reserve.

Turn-by-turn directions

We parked at the end of the village. The trail continued to the Satchinez Pond, but we preferred to walk the distance.

The path coincides, in a first stage, with the cycling route 1 and leads us along a plain landscape to the Satchinez Pond where tables and benches are available for resting.

From here we follow the road to the right of the pier. We already notice before us the swampy landscape with bushes and ponds that give the impression of a small delta. We continue along the well-trodden dirt road and as soon as possible we turn right, as a path emerges that leads through a group of trees. On the left side we notice that the farmed land, so we are on the edge of the reserve.

We follow the path along an arm of the river Apa Mare, avoiding the peninsula.

Getting there

From Timisoara via the Arad road E671. Just after the two-lane road ends, turn left onto the 692 road, through the village of Sânandrei to Călacea Băi.

At the first crossing that follows, turn left onto road 693. In Satchinez we pass the town hall (left opposite the church) and at the second crossroads we turn right.

We park as soon as the paved road ends.

Parking

Parking just next to the road.

Arrival by train, car, foot or bike

Equipment

I recommend wearing long pants. The humid area also attracts ticks.
