There's basically no top hill in Bucharest, for panoramas. Maybe only if you live on a higher floor or if you get at the higher levels of public or office buildings. However, a city walk on the city's hills is fairly doable; like this one, showing you the Filaret neighborhood and a slice of the former Uranus district. You'll see a former industrial area, with great touristic potential, as well as what's left of one of the old aristocratic neighborhoods, torn down in the 80s to make way for the People's House.

The former Filaret industrial area (partially still functional) is rarely explored by tourists. It occasionally comes alive thanks to the concerts organized at Arenele Romane venue. A partial revival was initiated in 2013 when an alternative cultural venue called Halele Carol was established here; it now continues given the relocation of the Expirat club headquarters here.

The route passes by and through Carol Park, for views, fresh air, history, and possibly a break. Located on one side of the park, Țepeș Castle, although not accessible to the public, stands out as one of the few buildings preserved on the original site after the International Exhibition of 1906. The event marked 40 years since King Charles was enthroned. The whole park was laid out for the event (until then, it used to be only a large marsh). The exhibition resembled a huge open-air museum, where you could spend a whole day admiring buildings, pavilions, and places for relaxation. The Țepeș Castle was, at the time, only a water tower. Since its aspect didn't fit in the exhibition, the organizers wanted to revamp it and make it look like a medieval fortress. The Poenari fortress was considered as a model. Hence the current name of the building.

Route highlights:

  • A 17th-century house (approx. 1790), a rare gem in the city and a beautiful example of civilian architecture. It's on Calea Șerban Vodă 33. You can only see it from the street, while the beauty of the courtyard remains hidden, but maybe you are lucky to be able to enter.
  • Filaret power plant, an industrial monument
  • Țepeș Castle
  • Xenophon Stairs Street
  • The Flowers Market (Piata de Flori), Bragadiru Palace area (remnants from the Uranus district), and the Bucharest Stock Exchange building, now The Ark project. Although only the facade has been recovered, it is among the few remaining buildings of the former Uranus district.

Author’s recommendation

  • A bus line is available between Sos. Viilor and Uranus. Also, if you want to avoid the Uranus area, tram 32 brings you back to Piata Unirii.
  • If you find a guided tour of the area, don't hesitate to try it, for more complex explanations. For example, Geoarhiva tour guide comes here often (not sure if they speak English)
