Cycle through quiet woodland and along the shores of the scenic Danube enjoying the peaceful surroundings and the fresh air.  The impressive “Donauschlinge”, where the river makes a complete 180-degree turn, marks the end of the day. This memorable view is one of the highlights of this trip! If you wish to visit the Trappist monastery of Engelszell, which is well known for its homemade liqueurs and high-quality beers, please note that it may be on the other side of the river and you can simply take a short ferry to get there!

Author’s recommendation

If you are not in a rush, we would recommend visiting "Zur Fährfrau" which serves homemade regional specialties and freshly pressed cider with a backdrop of the Danube!

Safety information

The Danube Cycle Path is one of Europe’s most popular cycling routes and is largely traffic-free. Where it is unavoidable there are short sections on roads that may become busier as you are entering or leaving towns, villages, and cities where traffic flow tends to be highest. Always wear a helmet when cycling. Our advice is to stay on the shoulder of the road where possible and take special care when crossing traffic.

Do remember to ride on the right-hand side of the road and whilst drivers in Europe are respectful of cyclists', please do be mindful of other road users at all times, obeying local road signs and any change in road conditions.

Before starting your ride it’s always worth inspecting your bike for any potential damage. Check for any damage to the frame, components, or wheels. Ensure there are no loose cables and that the tyres are inflated, and the brakes are working. If you are doubtful of the condition of your rental bike, please call the Rad & Reisen office.

Equipment

Always be prepared to cycle through a change of weather conditions and do check for any local weather warnings before cycling. Make sure to always carry weather-appropriate gear and clothing with you (including sun protection). Most cyclists wear [fingerless] cycle gloves for some padding on the handlebars. Remember to always wear a helmet when cycling.

Don't forget a spare battery pack for your smartphone if you are using it for navigation. Always carry plenty of provisions including water, a packed lunch, and snacks to keep you fuelled during your ride.

Please note that different laws and regulations apply, depending on the country you are visiting. In Hungary, it is mandatory to wear a safety (high visibility) vest at night and in poor vision when you are riding outside of the city borders. Make sure that you are prepared and feel comfortable with rules for cyclists. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking/cycling gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer and a day pack.
