Cycling along the Râul Mare - Retezat reservoirs and dams complex
This is an easy route to admire the sequence of hydro-power dams built in the 1970s on the Răul Mare at the foot of the Retezat Mountains.
The route runs entirely on asphalt and ticks off several villages around the Păclișa and Ostrov reservoirs, as well as the dams of the same name.
The Râul Mare - Retezat hydropower scheme comprises 10 hydroelectric power stations and several reservoirs, which are used to produce energy and supply water, as well as to mitigate floods in the mountains.
The whole project was impressive for the 1970s and 1980s, and its scale can be admired either by walking along the reservoirs or by passing through nearby villages and climbing on the dams.
On the way, stops can be made at tourist attractions that are part of the Tara Hațegului Dinosaurs Geopark, such as the House of the Dwarf Dinosaurs.
