Apuseni Natural Park

The Apuseni Nature Park has been a synonym for the main tourist area in Romania for many years now, especially among those looking for a holiday that combines picturesque landscapes with outdoor activities. The park covers a part of the Apuseni Mountains - several mountain groups in the counties of Alba, Bihor, and Cluj counties. The numerous caves open to visitors, karst plateaus, waterfalls, gorges, springs, and picturesque villages, or the mountain trails that anyone can hike in Apuseni surely fascinate all visitors arriving here.

Maps and trails

Usually, tourists say that they go to the Apuseni Mountains, although, theoretically, they end up in the Bihor, Vladeasa, or Gilău - Muntele Mare Mountains. From a geographical point of view, the Apuseni Mountains cover a much larger area, which also includes the Trascău Mountains or the Metaliferi Mountains.

the Apuseni Natural Park was set up in 1990 to protect the biodiversity and the landscape variety here; later on, in 2000, it was declared a protected area.

The park includes several spectacular areas, the result of the karst phenomena and of a forested karst relief - a landscape rarity. On top of that, hundreds of caves can be found everywhere across the park.

The Lost World Karst Plateau, respectively the Padiș area, with the Ponor Rock Formations and the Rădesei Gorges, the Someșul Cald Gorges, and the Galbenei Gorges form a fascinating, varied and wild landscape sculpted under the permanent action of the underground waters. Alongside, other protected areas such as Groapa Ruginoasa, the Glacier (cave) from Vârtop, or Sighiștelului Canyon make the unique landscape of the Apuseni Mountains a whole.

Tourists can explore all these natural wonders on the many hiking trails arranged inside the park. The routes are perfect for walking and trekking even with children, in any season.
