The fortress, located on the border between the Transylvania and Muntenia historical provinces, between the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului Mountains attracts numerous tourists due to the Legend of Count Dracula.

Initially Bran Castle was a fortress known as Dietrichstein, built by the Order of the Teutonic Knights in 1212, then conquered by Saxons in the late 13th century.

The fortress is now a museum dedicated to displaying art and furniture collected by Queen Maria. Tourists can see the interior on their own or by a guided tour. At the bottom of the hill is a small open-air museum park exhibiting traditional Romanian peasant structures (cottages, barns, etc.) from across the country.
