Founded in 1920, the Botanical Garden is a scientific, didactic and educational institution, whose foundation was laid by Professor Alexandru Borza.
The garden contains on its territory more than 10,000 species of plants from all corners of the world, being structured on several sectors: ornamental, phytogeographic, systematic, economic and medicinal. The Romanian flora and vegetation are represented by plants from the Transylvanian plains, Carpathian Mountains, Banat as well as other regions.

The garden's attractions include the Japanese Garden (a Japanese-style garden with a creek and a Japanese-style cottage, arranged in the traditional "gyo-no-niwa" style), the Roman Garden, dominated by the statue of the goddess Ceres (the goddess of cereals and bread), with archaeological remains from the old Roman colony Napoca, the Botanical Museum with a collection of about 7,000 exhibits as well as the greenhouse complex consisting of six sections: the aquarium greenhouse, the palm trees greenhouse, the Mediterranean and Australian plants greenhouse, the succulent plants greenhouse, the Bromeliaceae greenhouse and the orchids and ferns greenhouse.
