One important feature is the depiction on the northern façade of a ladder of virtues leading to the heavens gate. Devils try to pull the people climbing the sky ladder down into the gorge of hell, while angels float above the ladder. The people climbing the stairs are dressed like monks.
On the outer walls there are also 14 representations from the 16th century with illustrations of ancient Greek pagan poets and thinkers, such as a picture of the Neo-Platonic philosopher Porphyrios, Astakoe, Solon, Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras and a representation of the Sibylle. The pictures are an example of the relationship of the Eastern Church to the spiritual heritage of pre-Christian Greek antiquity.
