Biserica fortificată din Axente Sever

The phenomenon of fortified churches in Southem Transylvania is unique within the context of European architecture due to the large number of structures (It is estimated that 300 fortresses existed) and diverse architectural solutions Implemented during their construction. Protection against Invasions of migratory people was the main reason behind the construction of such a large number of fortified churches. Initially, protection measures were primitive and included mainly deep ditches, filled or not filled with water, and earthen or wooden fences. Between the 14th and 16th centuries. the Saxon communities of Southem Transylvania built small, but strongly fortified altadels around their churches as the churches were generally the most durable and strategically positioned buildings in the areas. In addition to the bell tower. craftsmen guilds constructed other towers and were tasked with the duty to protect them during times of nood or danger. Guard towers. Including shooting crenels and areas for throwing burning pitch. were also constructed within the overall fortifications. In the 14th century in Axente Sever village began the construction of a Gothic Church-Hall. The church consisted of a hall, a tower, and a choir. The tower is the oldest part of the building. This conclusion has been reached by taking into consideration the fact that the tower is the most massive building within the fortress complex. A similar construction style can be seen in nearby Agârbiciu and Tapu. On the ground floor the wall thickness is 1.60 meters and is crossed from east to west by an oval arch. Around year 1490. the church was rebuilt for defensive purposes. To the east and west of the tower. defensive walls and gangways were built. The "contraforti of the western facades were also strengthened. Additionally, another gangway and crenels for pitch throw were constructed. At the top of the tower a wocden defensive gangway was also bullt. The Choir was raised through the construction of two floors. Each floor included crenels for guns. The westem entrance was strengthened with a strong latticework enforced with sharp metal sticks. Today the frames of the latticework are still visible. Around the church was built a defensive wall Incorporating gangways and storehouses. which were used by the locals to store their wealth and as refugo for their familles in caso dslege.
