One of the most beautiful palace complexes in the city can be admired from the Podul Mare (Great Bridge) over Someș in Cluj-Napoca. It consists of four historic buildings at the four corners of the bridge.
All the palaces in this urban ensemble were built at the end of the 19th century in the context of the modernisation of the area.
The Babos Palace, completed in 1890, bears the name of its first owner, Sándor Babos. It is a Belle Époque style building and is V-shaped.
The Széki Palace, completed in 1893, is representative of the neo-Gothic style and was commissioned by the pharmacist Miklós Széki.
The Elian Palace completed in 1891 in Secession style belonged to a wine merchant.
The last palace in the complex is the Berde Palace, also a Belle Époque building.
The palaces have been partially restored and can be admired from the outside. On the ground floor, the spaces are generally rented out for small shops or cafés/restaurants. The Széki Palace also houses a pharmacy and upstairs there are residential spaces.
