Prior to the constructed dams in the 1980s, the estuary communicated with the Black Sea - north through the mouth of Periteașca and south through the mouth of Portița - these migration routes being very important for fish species that came to lay their eggs in the estuaries. Receiving fresh water from the Danube through the Sfântu Gheorghe arm and through the Dranov and Dunavăț canals, the estuary became, after closing its mouths, a fresh water lake.
In the north of the lake is the island of Popina declared a nature reserve.
The Enisala Canal connects Babadag and Razim Lakes.
Despite the impressive area (415 square km), the depth of the lake is not large, not exceeding 3 meters.
