Your complete traveling guide to Maramureș

A county overlapping the same name historical region - this is Maramureș. The county's geographical position and infrastructure have favored the preservation of the defining elements of the area, starting with the specific manner of speaking and the local cuisine, to the traditional costume and folk dances, ending with details of religious or lay architecture.

To explore Maramureș at your leisure, by car, caravan, or even by bike, try the routes proposed by the Drumul Maramuresului project. Whether you have a weekend or just a couple of days to spend in Maramureș, travel from Sighetu Marmației to Baia Mare, then to Târgu Lăpuș, and even further to Borșa, both on main and secondary roads, perfect to admire the beauties of the places.

Choose accommodation in the main cities or the traditional guesthouses in the picturesque localities that you pass through, such as Breb, Mara, Vişeu de Sus, Săliștea de Sus or Borșa.

Historical Maramureș

Bordering what is now known as historical Maramureș, Valea Marei (the area surrounding the Mara village) is an opportunity to have a glimpse of the mountain peaks that stretch as far as Ukraine. On Valea Cosăului (along the Cosău river), you will fall in love with the rows of traditional houses, with splendidly decorated gates. The winding roads from Valea Izei and Valea Vişeului take you to UNESCO-listed wooden churches, gems of religious architecture, but also to more touristy places, where the traditional blends (still) harmoniously with the modern.

Less touristy Maramureș

For less crowded places or alpine landscapes, head to the natural parks. The Rodna Mountains or the Maramures Mountains are the cherries on the cake for mountaineers. Isolated from the rest of the mountain groups in the Carpathians, they are charming when discovered.

Their paths seduce you with photogenic landscapes untouched for hundreds of years, with glacial lakes, marked paths, sheepfolds, and huts, but also with the promise of a few days of complete peace on rarely trodden paths. If you are passionate about wildlife photography or observing animal species in natural habitats, the mountains of Maramureș are the ideal place to hunt marmots or lynxes.

In the winter months, the ski and snowboard slopes in Maramureș are among the blessed ones - while snow is melting in other mountain resorts, here you might still find the best conditions for fun outside, in the snow. And the Șuior ski resort is one of the best equipped in the country.

Holiday with kids in Maramureș

Maramureș is a spectacular tourist destination for families with children. At the top of the activities, there's the steam train ride (mocanița); in addition to trying this unique means of transportation, children also enjoy the beautiful scenery. Săpânța, with its Merry Cemetery, is a destination where children can discover a more relaxed way to look at death, through humorous lyrics and vivid colors. In recent years, a wonderful event has become the main attraction for tourists, and for children, it can be a unique experience - the hot air balloon festival. Maramureș Baloon Fiesta is organized at the beginning of each autumn.
