Caraș-Severin County

Romanian tourism would be much poorer today if the Bigăr Waterfall had been featured in National Geographic magazine, in 2013. Since then, the touristic attractions in Caraş-Severin have become much more popular among Romanian and foreign tourists alike. Besides those, the county boasts an enviable landscape diversity, while also offering multiple opportunities for outdoor activities, which are worth the effort to travel all the way here.

Although part of the Bigăr Waterfall collapsed in the meantime, Caraș-Severin County has not been deprived of its status as ”the pearl” of tourism in the Banat region. Travelers still have so much to discover here: the natural wonders of the national parks, the water mills part of the UNESCO heritage, former industrial cities being reinvented, the isolated settlements in the Cerna Mountains, and the Czech villages. Year after year, jazz lovers gather on the plateau at Gărâna, for a festival that has become a tradition.

Be sure to try one of these things in Caras-Severin

Three national parks in Caras-Severin

One of the particularities of Caraș-Severin is the three national parks there: Semenic-Caraș Gorges, Cheile Nerei - Beușnița, and Domogled - Cerna Valley (shared with the neighboring counties Gorj and Mehedinți).

Don't hesitate to explore them in any season. Though the hiking trails to Beușnița Waterfall or Cheile Nerei are difficult to access in winter, the ski slopes in Semenic are open. Just as the villagers can climb to the villages in the Cerna Mountains in wet weather, you will be able to climb with your backpack as well.

Of course, only the warm season is suitable to try one of the crags in the Cerna Valley. Also, don't miss a rafting or even canyoning tour on the Cerna River, if you are in the area and the opportunity arises.

Touristic villages in Caraș-Severin

Like in most border counties, multiculturalism is rich in Caraș-Severin. Czechs, Croats, Serbs, and Ukrainians have passed through various localities in the county and settled here over time.

The Czech Land in Banat is a unique tourist destination in Romania. Villages such as Gârnic, Sfânta Elena, Bigăr, and Ravensca have a predominantly Czech population. During the tourist season, most visitors are not Romanians, but Czechs. Fortunately, poor tourism infrastructure and little promotion have kept the area safe from mass tourism. A mountain bike tour through these villages is probably the best way to explore them.

Good to know: Bigăr village has nothing to do with Bigăr Waterfall. The two are at opposite poles both geographically and as a tourist destination. Access to Bigăr Waterfall is from DN 75B, nearby Bozovici.

Easier accessible is Carasova, a village with a majority Croatian population. The Terra Banatica leg on the Via Transilvanica hiking trail passes through the village. So not only you have marked trails that will lead you here, but also many natural tourist attractions (gorges, caves), so you can spend more time in the area.

Try a weekend getaway in Caraș-Severin

A weekend is certainly too little to explore all that Caraș-Severin County has to offer. If you can't spend more time traveling around the county, choose a single area to explore in-depth.

If you are staying in:

  • Berzasca: Try a one-day tour in a Czech village (by mountain bike), a one-day exploration around the village of Sfanta Elena (hiking, Gaura cu Muscă Cave), possibly combined with sport fishing; then drive to Băile Herculane for one or two days of hiking, maybe even thermal baths

  • Sasca Română or Sasca Montană: A good opportunity to explore only the sights near Cheile Nerei (caves, gorges, waterfalls, lakes)
  • Anina: A one-day tour of the Gârliște mills ensemble and the Caraș Gorges, a one-day hiking trip through the Gârliște Gorges, one day to maybe combine a tour with the tourist train with a visit to the Bigăr Waterfall
  • Văliug: A walking tour or mountain biking tour in the Semenic Mountains, one day on the ski slopes nearby if it's winter, a mountain bike circuit around the nearby lakes, one full day on TransSemenic scenic roads to and from Reșița
  • Caransebeș: Spend the weekend exploring the hiking trails near the city, in the Tarcu Mountains (towards Poiana Mărului, possibly following the Via Tranilvanica route, towards Muntele Mic), possibly also a day in Resita
