Attractions in Călărași
One of the reasons why Călărași County remains unknown to tourists might be its position - in the Bărăgan Plain (known as an uninteresting, poor, and overexposed place). Lack of information or a promotion strategy would be other reasons.
However, Bucharest residents looking for one-day getaways can easily reach most tourist attractions in Călărași in two hours tops, by car. For families with children, as well as for those who want to explore new places, a road trip through the villages on the Mostiștea Valley, even with a stopover in Călărași, for a swim and sunbathing, can be the perfect weekend recipe.
Recreational activities are more varied than you would expect. Beyond water sports - boating, fishing (local cuisine is also based on fish) - do not miss the horseback riding competitions at Herghelia Jegălia (spring or autumn), a deep-dive into the culture of Gumelnița civilization, sunsets on the Danube or a day-trip to the Bulgarian neighbors (boat crossing from Călărași).
Călărași County's extreme sport, and the main trigger for foreign tourists in this area, is biking on the EuroVelo 6 route (between Căscioarele and Călărași). Do not try this cycle route in mid-summer or winter (due to extreme temperatures and wind). Spring is recommended, when the rapeseed fields are a great opportunity for Instagram pictures with superb contrast, especially against a background of the bluest sky.
